Anthropic releases the Claude 3 family

Claude 3 arrived as three models, Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus, covering different balances of speed, cost, and capability.

Anthropic released Claude 3 as a family instead of one model. Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus gave users an explicit tradeoff between speed, cost, and intelligence. Opus and Sonnet launched in Claude and the API, with Haiku to follow.

This was the release that made Anthropic feel fully competitive at the frontier. More importantly, the model family format became the normal way to sell intelligence at several price points.
